Artist Statement

I am passionate about my art.

It is my constant companion.  Not an acquiescent companion, but one that is continuously challenging, restless, disturbing and yet satisfying.  The path we travel seemingly has no end and is always evolving.

I fall in love with molten glass each time I take a fresh gather and see its amber color, the light and heat it radiates, the way the light reflects thru it, and how it responds to block and paper.

I like how the glass responds to process.  Its physical properties are known.  Once understood, they can be reliably counted upon.  Yet it is uncompromising it you violate its rules.

Working with hot glass is limitless in its combinations of form, composition, color and pattern.  Each glass artist brings their own unique artistry.  Each piece has its own unique characteristics.

I like the ephemeral nature of the process.  From start to finish, blowing a piece is quick.  The annealing process fills me with anticipation as I anxiously await a final reveal of a cooled piece.  I am always tempted to open the annealer door.

Each piece leads to another.  Your last piece is inspiration for the next.  If you pay close attention, you’ll learn something each time you blow.  And, if like me, you’ll probably forget something as well.

Working with hot glass is a blending of physicality, artistry and technical skill.  It’s difficult to master.  Its physically demanding, The heat and weight of the glass exhaust you.  Yet I am drawn to it relentlessly.

I am restless and anxious when uncertain about how to proceed with my next piece.

Pattern and color are recurring themes in my work.  I find inspiration in natural configurations, practical items and the work of artists I admire.  Traditional quilt and geometric patterns are of special interest and are reflected in many of my pieces.

My work is typically not for sale.  Instead I find joy in sharing with friends and nonprofits.
